Yes, government rebates and financial incentives for home solar battery systems are very much alive in 2025. Both federal and state programs are helping Australian homeowners invest in solar battery storage. A new nationwide discount is rolling out in July 2025, alongside various state-level rebates, loans, and feed-in tariffs. Below, we break down the current incentives – from Victoria’s Solar Homes Program to green financing options – and what to consider before buying a solar power battery for your home.
Yes. The Australian Government announced the “Cheaper Home Batteries” program. Thanks to the program, the federal government will provide around a 30% upfront discount on installing eligible home battery systems starting July 2025.
So, how does this work in a real-life scenario? How much can you save with the rebate?
In practice, the discount is delivered as tradable small-scale technology certificates (STCs) credited to your installer. This lowers the initial price you pay. The discount is roughly $372 per kWh of battery capacity. For example, adding a 10 kWh battery could yield a discount of approximately $3,700 off the system cost. This federal battery rebate will gradually reduce each year until the scheme ends in 2030.
Who is eligible for the rebate?
The federal battery incentive is available to all households and small businesses installing an eligible battery between 5 kWh and 50 kWh usable capacity. Systems up to 100 kWh are eligible, but the rebate only applies to the first 50 kWh.
The battery and inverter must also be on the Clean Energy Council’s approved product list, and on-grid installations need to be VPP-capable (able to participate in a virtual power plant). Off-grid homes can also claim the discount if they meet distance or cost thresholds for grid connection.
Australia’s states and territories have varying programs for residential solar batteries. Below is a breakdown of current (2025) government incentives in each region:
Victorian homeowners who are deemed eligible for the benefits of the program can receive a rebate of around $2,950 for installing a home battery. The rebate can be used for adding a battery to an existing solar PV system or for new solar and battery installations.
Key eligibility points include:
Victoria initially targeted certain postcodes for battery grants (to support specific areas), but the program has since expanded statewide. This means Victorians installing a solar battery for the house can still get significant support in 2025 through Solar Victoria.
NSW no longer offers an upfront rebate, but homeowners may still access interest-free loans through the Empowering Homes program. This program gives homeowners up to $14,000 for solar + battery, or $9,000 for battery only. Battery adoption is also supported via community battery trials and solar feed-in tariffs.
QLD doesn’t currently have a state battery rebate, but homeowners benefit from the new federal battery discount and feed-in tariffs for solar exports.
SA’s Home Battery Scheme (up to $6,000) has closed. Now, support focuses on VPP incentives, which give credits or discounts for joining a Virtual Power Plant (Tesla, AGL, Origin, etc.)
The ACT’s Next Gen Battery Program offered ~$3,500 rebates, but funding is nearly exhausted. Some support is still available via the Sustainable Household Scheme, which gives interest-free loans up to $15,000 for energy upgrades.
There are no upfront incentives in Western Australia, Tasmania, and the Northern Territory. The only positive news for homeowners of Western Australia is that smart tariffs and utility programs are available for those who use batteries. Western Australia focuses on encouraging battery use through the Distributed Energy Buyback Scheme (DEBS), providing higher rates paid for evening solar exports.
Aside from rebates, another key way to make a home battery more affordable is through green financing. Both governments and banks are offering low-cost loans specifically for energy upgrades.
The Australian Government has set up a $1 billion Household Energy Upgrades Fund (HEUF) to encourage lenders to offer discounted finance for home energy improvements. Through this, the CEFC co-finances “green loans” for things like battery-ready solar PV, home batteries, energy-efficient appliances, etc.. Many major banks and credit unions participate, meaning you can get loans with interest rates far below normal personal loans to install solar and batteries.
Banks are increasingly offering personal loans labelled for sustainability. These green personal loans often have lower interest than standard loans if you use them for approved eco-products, which include solar panels, home batteries, electric vehicles, etc.. For example, a bank might offer a 5-year personal loan at a special rate if you show it’s for a battery installation. It’s worth negotiating or shopping around for these products, as the competition to finance the clean energy transition is growing.
In some states, programs have offered interest-free loans for solar and batteries. We mentioned NSW’s Empowering Homes (which was a 0% loan) and the ACT’s Sustainable Household Scheme (also 0% over 10 years for clean energy investments). Even if these are limited to certain applicant pools or timeframes, they are incredibly valuable if you qualify – you essentially borrow for a battery with no extra cost beyond the principal. Check your state or territory’s energy department site for any current loan initiatives.
Combining a government rebate with a low-interest green loan can make a solar battery installation for the house much more attainable.
Before you rush to buy a shiny new tesla solar battery melbourne or LG battery, it’s wise to do some homework. Here are key tips on what to consider before installing a solar battery storage system at home:
You should also consider your current electricity rates and future changes. Also, factor in maintenance or any subscription fees.
Australian homeowners still have access to multiple government rebates and incentives for home solar batteries. The landscape is improving, with the new federal battery rebate (~30% off) complementing state programs like Victoria’s Solar Homes battery rebate, and various green loan schemes reducing upfront costs.
By combining these incentives, installing a solar power battery for your home is more affordable than ever. Now is the best time to go solar. Just remember to do your due diligence: check with your local authority or Clean Energy Council resources before buying.
